Close to the Titicaca Lake there are several small islands where people live from what the island offers. The people from the community Occosuyo live on the Amantañi Island. They live in a tradition way and only visit the closest city Puno once in a while.I was backpacking with Coco and we found this amazing tour at the Hotel where we were staying. I had the opportunity to stay two days at this island. After the tour operator picked us up in a bus, we realised we were only with 6 other participants that could make this tour today.
After a boattrip from 3 hours at the Titicaca Lake we arrived at the Amantañi Island. Every couple would be taken to a family that would take care of them the upcoming two days. We were selected with another French couple to mamma Norma.
From the coast to mama Norma’s house we had to cross a hill one hour long. They adviced us we should walk very slowly, because we are not used to make exersice above 12500 sea level. The air is different which can make you feel exhausted in short time. Next to the fact that mama Norma does this daily.
We crossed a beautiful nature and other families that live in small houses from stone. Every small house has an incredible big garden that provides them to make their diner. Potatoes, carrots, olives. Mama Norma lives with her mother. The sleeping rooms and as well the toilet has it’s own space in another stone house. Yes, they have a toilet here with toiletpaper. Just 20 years ago this island was a poor place and is building up thanks to tourism that often books a stay over on the Amantani island at the families. With this income they can build a better home like toilets.
She showed us pictures and letters from people that passed by years ago. They are still in contact with her. Even though a postmen will never come to her door. None of the houses have a doornumber. The people send it to another adres. They tell how life is at the other side of the world or inspire her to develop her life here on the island. I was suprised she had a smartphone. But is there internet on this island? I was already a few hours without it (which can be peacefull sometimes). Well, on one central point on the island there is an internet connection. She even has Facebook. When she wants to go on the internet she can go to the central point. This is also how we lately send the pictures of us together.
She was an excellent host. After a short time of resting we were invited for diner. We were all on a long time with the french couple inside a small stone house where is the kitchen, the fire, a closet and a dinertable. The food she cooked for us came all from her garden or from a neighbour. In Peru excists so many different kind of potatoes. They also grow here. I experienced new tastes. The way she cooked for me was so unique in an unique place, with new friends and a new way of communicating. I was so happy Coco can speak spanish and can translate her stories and also can translate our joyfull reactions about her treating us so good.
I promissed I will never forget her and that I will tell you if you ever visit Peru: ask about a stay over at the community Occosuyo on the Isla Amantani. A great two-way experience to connect and learn from eachother. Special for her good care and stories I’ve made a drawing which she can keep.
So much love for mi mamà Norma from the Amantañi island 🌺 Thanks to lovely Coco and my backpack trip I stayed two days at her home. For more information, feel free to send me a message! It has been such a great special experience for me!! LOVE
